Japanese-born artist Mitski Miyawaki’s fourth album is arguably her best: an indie rock ode to depression, anxiety, happiness, and everything in between, Puberty 2 is as terrifying as it is complex. There’s metaphoric commentary on the nature of happiness, jaunting melancholy, and economically driven rage.

Most memorably, she pulls out all the stops about cultural identity and multinational angst in the lead single "Your Best American Girl," which, driven by distortion and guitars, is simultaneously tragic and motivating. Puberty 2 astounds with its strength, its layered complexity.
